  • Sweet Peppers

I grow and sale mostly heirloom plants at the Vernon Friday Farmers Market, starting the first friday of May. I am a backyard gardener that sales a few extra Pepper and Tomato plants along with some of my art works. I am a very small scale grower so if there is something that you would really like to try, please come early to the market to buy your plants.

The sweet pepper is an excellent source of vitamins A and C and a good source of potassium. It also contains vitamin B6 and folic acid for energy. I`ve chosen these peppers because of there great taste and very early maturing qualities.

Peppers thrive in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sun a day, high heat, and normal to dry soil, provided it's well-drained. They also need to be started indoors or greenhouse early in the year (April) to produce mature fruit. I have been trying different varieties to find ones that do well in our area with ease and have that great red pepper taste.

    Hot Peppers

In 1912 a chemists by the name of Wilbur Scoville, working for the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company, developed a method to measure the heat level of chili peppers. The test is named after him, the "Scoville Organoleptic Test". All hot peppers contain capsaicinoids, natural substances that produce a burning sensation in the mouth, causing the eyes to water and the nose to run, and even induce perspiration. Capsaicinoids have no flavor or odor, but act directly on the pain receptors in the mouth and throat. The primary capsaicinoids, capsaicin, is so hot that a single drop diluted in 100,000 drops of water will produce a blistering of the tongue. Capsaicinoids are found primarily in the pepper's placenta--the white "ribs" that run down the middle and along the sides of a pepper. Since the seeds are in such close contact with the ribs, they are also hot.

Use Extreme Caution when handling very hot peppers!. Use disposable rubber gloves and wash your hands well when cutting any hot peppers. Keep hands away from the eyes, if need be....apply sliced cucumber or wet tea bags to relieve the burning.

With growing hot peppers the heat will vary due to a couple reasons. The more hours of sunshine will increase the heat and stress of a plant such as drought or lack of watering.
