Tomato Plants

I grow and sale mostly heirloom plants at the Vernon Friday Farmers Market, starting the first friday of May. I am a backyard gardener that sales a few extra Pepper and Tomato plants along with some of my art works. I am a very small scale grower so if there is something that you would really like to try, please come early to the market to buy your plants.

As time goes by and more and more hybrid (and GMO) crops are taking over our store shelves I am feeling the need to preserve the heirloom varieties. So what I focus on in my garden and share with others are some of my favorites.

Tomatoes are not as high in nutrients as other vegetables but they are the leader where vitamin C is concerned. A medium tomato (120 g) contains about 23 mg of vitamin C. They are rich in water (more than 90 %), the tomato is a diuretic. Which will help eliminate toxins in our bodies. Tomatoes also contain lycopene. This is the one responsible for the red color of tomatoes. Lycopene is a phytochemicals on which many studies have been done. With their actual knowledge, researchers agree that this compound have powerful anti cancer properties, especially prostate cancer. Bio availability of lycopene is greater from heated or homogenized tomatoes (sauce, soup...) than from raw tomatoes.

Tomatoes are classified as either determinate or indeterminate. Indeterminate tomatoes means they grow continuously. Additionally, they continue to produce fruit until they are killed by cold weather or terminated by the gardener. Determinate or bush types bear a full crop all at once and top off at a specific height. They are a good choice for container growing or small gardens.
